Humanym — Terms of Service
Last updated: August 28, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Humanym — the website at humanym.com and our iOS and Android applications (together, "the Platform"). The Platform is operated by Humanym LLC, a Wyoming limited liability company ("Humanym," "we," "us," "our").
By creating an account or using the Platform, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the Platform.
1. What Humanym Is
Humanym is an anonymous correspondence-matching platform. You write short, honest messages — letters. The Platform analyzes how you write — not merely what you write — and routes your letter to a compatible recipient based on writing style, sophistication, and topic. Identities are anonymous by default: in each conversation you appear under a randomly generated alias (e.g., "WanderingLarch") that is unique to that conversation.
Humanym is not a messaging app, a dating service, or a social network. It is a place for thoughtful, long-form correspondence between strangers. Correspondence with historical figures drawn from our letters corpus is available to everyone at no cost.
2. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to use Humanym. By creating an account, you represent that you are at least 18. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18, and if we learn that a user is under 18 we will terminate their account. Identity verification (Section 7) additionally re-confirms that a verified user is 18 or older.
3. Account Creation and Authentication
3.1 Email Authentication
You create an account by providing your email address. We send you a one-time verification code to sign in. Humanym is passwordless — there are no account passwords.
3.2 Social Login
You may also sign in using Google or Apple ("Sign in with Apple"). When you use social login, we receive your email address and a unique identifier from the provider. We do not access your contacts, photos, or other data from those services. If you use Sign in with Apple's private-relay email, we use the relay address you provide.
3.3 One Account Per Person
You may create only one account. Creating multiple accounts to circumvent limits, bans, or moderation decisions is grounds for permanent removal.
4. Your Letters and Correspondence
4.1 What You Write
You retain ownership of the text you write on Humanym. By submitting a letter or reply, you grant us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to:
- Analyze it (content, voice, and intent analysis for matching purposes);
- Store it;
- Deliver it to matched recipients; and
- Display excerpts anonymously, without attribution to your alias, in trending features such as Chatter.
This license exists solely to operate the Platform. We do not sell your writing, we do not use it for advertising, and we do not use it to train AI models. Our analysis is inference-only.
4.2 Anonymous Correspondence
All correspondence is anonymous by default. Each conversation uses a unique alias for you — your alias in one conversation differs from your alias in another. You must not attempt to identify other users through external means.
4.3 Identity Reveal (Verified Users)
Verified users (Section 7) may choose to be shown by their real name within a conversation. Reveal is silent and mutual: each participant privately opts in, either per-conversation or through a global default (which is off unless you turn it on). The other person is never told that you have opted in. A real name is revealed only when both participants in an active conversation have opted in; if only one has opted in, nothing is revealed. Opt-in is sticky within a conversation.
The only identity ever revealed is a real name (in the form "First L."). Humanym does not support profile photos of any kind, so there is no image to reveal.
5. Content Rules
5.1 Prohibited Content
The following is not permitted on Humanym in any context:
- Threats and harassment — direct or implied threats of violence, personal attacks, slurs, dehumanizing language.
- Sexual content — pornographic or graphic descriptions of sexual acts, or sexual solicitation.
- Spam and solicitation — commercial advertising, product promotion, or fundraising appeals (applies to opening letters; relaxed within ongoing conversations).
- Personally identifiable information — real names, phone numbers, email addresses, physical addresses, social media handles, or financial identifiers, except where a conversation has entered identity reveal by mutual opt-in.
5.2 What Is Allowed
Humanym is a space for honest human expression. The following are explicitly permitted:
- Strong opinions and emotions;
- Discussion of difficult, dark, or sensitive topics;
- Unconventional writing styles, poetry, stream of consciousness;
- Romantic or suggestive language (distinct from explicit sexual content);
- References to books, films, articles, and other cultural works;
- Vague personal context ("I'm a nurse in the Midwest").
5.3 Automated Content Screening
Every letter and reply passes through automated content screening before delivery. If your message is flagged:
- It will not be delivered;
- You will be notified that it did not pass review;
- No penalty is applied for a single flagged message; and
- Repeated violations may result in account restrictions (Section 10).
5.4 Reporting
You may report any letter or correspondence you believe violates these Terms. Reports are reviewed by our moderation team. The person you report is not notified that you filed a report.
5.5 Zero Tolerance for Objectionable Content and Abusive Users
Humanym has zero tolerance for objectionable content and abusive users. Objectionable content includes anything prohibited by Section 5.1 and any other material that a reasonable person would find threatening, hateful, harassing, sexually explicit, or otherwise abusive.
- Every report is reviewed by a person. Reports are not resolved by automated systems alone.
- We act within 24 hours. When a report is upheld, we remove the offending content and eject the user who provided it — by suspending or permanently banning their account — within 24 hours of receiving the report.
- Blocking is immediate and permanent. When you block someone, the conversation ends at once and is removed from your view. The person you block cannot contact you again, and you do not need to wait for a review.
- Reports are anonymous. The person you report is never told who reported them.
6. Matching and Analysis
6.1 How Matching Works
When you submit a letter, we analyze it using AI to understand:
- Content — the topics you write about, emotional tone, and abstraction level;
- Voice — vocabulary range, syntactic complexity, precision, depth, vulnerability, curiosity, specificity, and warmth; and
- Intent — whether you are seeking similarity, complementary perspectives, or asymmetric exchange (such as advice-seeking).
This analysis produces a mathematical representation of your writing that we use to find compatible recipients. We do not match based on demographics, location, or profile information — only on how and what you write.
6.2 No Guarantee of Matching
We make reasonable efforts to match your letter with a compatible recipient, but we cannot guarantee that every letter will be matched. Letters that receive no matches within the offer period may be retired.
7. Identity Verification
Verification is optional. It confirms that a real, unique adult human stands behind your alias, and it makes you eligible for identity reveal (Section 4.3) and the Verified badge.
7.1 How Verification Works
Identity verification is performed by our verification provider, Veriff, using a government-issued identity document and a liveness/selfie check. You complete the check on Veriff's hosted flow. The identity-document image and the selfie/liveness capture are processed and retained by Veriff under Veriff's own policies — they never touch Humanym's servers.
From Veriff's decision, we receive and store only the minimum we need:
- Your legal name (used to set and validate your reveal name; never shown to other users and never returned through our app);
- An 18-or-older indicator derived from your date of birth (we store the indicator, not your date of birth); and
- The decision result and a Veriff session reference.
7.2 Age Requirement
Verification requires that you are 18 or older. If the check indicates you are under 18, verification will not complete.
7.3 Your Reveal Name
Once verified, your default reveal name is your legal first name followed by your surname initial (e.g., "Joseph S."). You may humanize the first-name portion (for example, a common nickname); the surname initial is anchored to your legal identity and cannot be changed. Proposed names may be checked for consistency with your legal name and, in some cases, held for brief review before they take effect. You always retain a working reveal name while any review is pending.
7.4 Permanence
Verification is permanent. It does not expire, is never re-run, and survives cancellation of a Premium subscription. Cancelling Premium never un-verifies you.
7.5 Verification Pricing and Refunds
Verification is a one-time purchase (see Section 8 for current pricing). If a verification check cannot be approved for a reason that can never be resolved — for example, the person is under 18, no valid government ID is presented, or fraud is confirmed — you are entitled to a refund of the one-time verification charge: for website purchases processed by Stripe we issue the refund automatically, and for purchases made through the App Store or Google Play the refund is issued through that store's refund process (we will direct you to it). Soft failures (such as a blurry capture) can be retried at no additional cost. Premium members who receive verification as part of their subscription have no separate verification charge to refund.
8. Plans, Pricing, and the Store
8.1 Tiers
| Free | Verified (one-time) | Premium (monthly) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daily outbound sends | 3 / day | 3 / day | a high daily cap (anti-abuse) |
| Access to your conversations | All | All | All |
| Identity reveal eligibility | — | Eligible | Eligible (verification included; see 8.4) |
| Personalization (stationery, seals, app themes, icons) | Default sets | Default sets | Full library while subscribed |
| Collectible / seasonal packs | Buy & keep forever | Buy & keep forever | Buy & keep forever |
| Tier badge | — | Verified mark | Premium recognition (and Verified once you verify) |
Daily send limits count every outbound message — a new opening, a reply to a hero-queue letter, and a reply within a conversation all count. Premium's higher cap is an anti-abuse ceiling that a thoughtful human will not reach.
There are no advertisements on any tier. Humanym does not show ads.
8.2 Pricing and Founding Members
Verified and Premium each have a regular (anchor) price and a lower founding-member price offered to early members while the community is small. While the founding window is open, the price shown in the app is the founding price. It is a discount that ends once the founding window closes — not a price that will rise on you.
Grandfathering: a Premium member who subscribes at the founding rate keeps that rate for as long as their subscription stays continuously active. If you cancel, the founding rate ends; re-subscribing later is at the then-current price.
Current prices are displayed in the app at the point of purchase and govern your transaction.
8.3 The Store
The Store offers personalization items — stationery, wax seals, app themes, and avatar icons:
- Premium Library — items included with Premium while your subscription is active. If you cancel Premium, library items re-lock, but anything you separately purchased is unaffected.
- Collectible and seasonal packs — purchased individually and owned forever, usable on any tier, including Free and after cancelling Premium.
All personalization is drawn from our curated catalog. You cannot upload images or free-type personalization, and no personalization element may encode personal identity.
8.4 Verification and Premium
Premium includes the verification entitlement, but verification only takes effect once you complete the check in Section 7. Subscribing to Premium does not by itself make you verified. Verification and subscription are independent: you can be verified without Premium, and you can hold Premium before completing verification.
9. Purchases, Billing, and App Stores
9.1 How You Pay
Where you buy determines who processes your payment:
- Website (humanym.com): payments are processed by Stripe. By purchasing, you agree to Stripe's terms. Applicable sales tax is calculated and collected through Stripe Tax.
- iOS app: purchases are processed by Apple through In-App Purchase.
- Android app: purchases are processed by Google through Google Play Billing.
We do not see or store your full payment card number in any case.
9.2 Subscriptions, Renewal, and Cancellation
Premium is a recurring subscription that renews automatically until cancelled. You may cancel at any time and retain Premium access through the end of your current billing period.
- For website subscriptions, cancel and manage billing through your Settings.
- For App Store subscriptions, manage and cancel through your Apple ID subscription settings.
- For Google Play subscriptions, manage and cancel through your Google Play account.
9.3 Refunds
Refunds for purchases made through Apple or Google are handled under those stores' refund policies. For website purchases processed by Stripe: verification charges are refunded automatically only in the circumstances described in Section 7.5; subscription refunds may be issued at our discretion for the current period. Collectible/seasonal pack purchases are generally non-refundable once delivered to your account. For website refund questions, contact support@humanym.com.
9.4 Apple App Store Terms
If you use the iOS app, the following apply between you and us, with Apple as a third-party beneficiary entitled to enforce them:
- These Terms are between you and Humanym only, not Apple. Apple is not responsible for the app or its content.
- Your license to use the iOS app is a limited, non-transferable license to use it on Apple-branded devices you own or control, as permitted by the App Store Terms of Service.
- Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app; we are solely responsible for support, to the extent any is required by these Terms.
- We, not Apple, are responsible for addressing any claims that the app or your use of it fails to conform to applicable law, infringes third-party rights, or gives rise to product-liability or consumer-protection claims, to the extent we are responsible under these Terms and applicable law.
- You represent that you are not located in a country subject to a U.S. Government embargo or designated as "terrorist-supporting," and that you are not on any U.S. Government list of prohibited or restricted parties.
10. Account Status and Moderation
10.1 Account Statuses
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Active | Normal access to all features. |
| Probation | Reduced access — you can read conversations, reply within your existing conversations, and receive offers, but cannot write new opening letters, respond to trending features, claim hero-queue items, or opt in to identity reveal. |
| Suspended | No access — temporary (with an end date) or permanent. |
10.2 What Triggers Restrictions
Restrictions may result from repeated content violations, reports from other users, or other violations of these Terms.
10.3 Appeals
If your account is suspended — temporarily or permanently — you may submit an appeal through the app. Appeals are reviewed by our moderation team. We aim to respond within 5–7 business days. Our decision on appeals is final.
10.4 Termination by Us
We may suspend or terminate your account for violations of these Terms. Where a violation is reported to us, we act on it — removing the content and suspending or banning the account responsible — within 24 hours of the report (Section 5.5). Upon termination, your active conversations are closed and your correspondence is removed from circulation, subject to the deletion rules in Section 11 and our Privacy Policy.
11. Account Deactivation and Deletion
You may close your account at any time from your Settings. Deletion is designed to be recoverable for a limited time so you do not lose your correspondence by accident:
- Deactivate now. When you request deletion, your account is deactivated immediately: you are signed out everywhere, you stop receiving offers and matches, and you cannot send. We schedule your data for permanent deletion 30 days later.
- Reactivate within 30 days. If you sign in again during the 30-day window, we route you to a reactivation screen. Reactivating restores your account fully, because nothing has been destroyed yet.
- Permanent purge after 30 days. After the window closes, we permanently delete the data that belongs only to you. For shared two-party conversations, we remove your identifying information but keep your correspondent's copy of the exchange readable to them, because that content is also theirs.
Some records are retained after deletion where the law requires it (for example, payment and tax records). See the Privacy Policy for details on what is deleted, anonymized, and retained.
12. Intellectual Property
12.1 Our Content
The Humanym platform, design system, matching algorithms, personalization catalog, and all associated trademarks, logos, and visual identity are owned by Humanym LLC. You may not copy, modify, or distribute any part of the Platform except as expressly permitted.
12.2 Your Content
You own what you write. The license you grant us (Section 4.1) is limited to operating the Platform. If you delete your account, your content is removed from active circulation, though copies already delivered to a correspondent may remain in their conversation history (Section 11).
13. Disclaimers
13.1 No Warranty
The Platform is provided "as is" and "as available." We do not guarantee that it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or free from harmful content. No automated screening system is perfect.
13.2 No Responsibility for User Conduct
We do not endorse, verify, or take responsibility for the content of any letter or correspondence. You interact with other users at your own risk. If another user's behavior concerns you, use the report feature.
13.3 No Professional Advice
Humanym is not a substitute for professional counseling, therapy, or crisis support. If you or someone you know is in crisis, contact your local emergency services or a crisis helpline.
14. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Humanym LLC and its members, officers, and operators shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages — including loss of data, loss of profits, or emotional distress — arising from your use of the Platform. To the maximum extent permitted by law, our total liability for any claim relating to the Platform shall not exceed the greater of the amount you paid us in the twelve months before the claim or one hundred U.S. dollars ($100).
15. Dispute Resolution and Arbitration
Please read this section carefully — it affects how disputes are resolved and limits the ways you can bring a claim.
15.1 Binding Arbitration
Except as provided below, any dispute, claim, or controversy arising out of or relating to these Terms or the Platform shall be resolved by binding individual arbitration administered by a recognized arbitration provider under its applicable consumer rules, rather than in court. The arbitration shall be seated in the State of Wyoming, or conducted remotely where the rules allow. Judgment on the award may be entered in any court of competent jurisdiction.
15.2 Class-Action Waiver
You and Humanym agree that each may bring claims against the other only in an individual capacity, and not as a plaintiff or class member in any purported class, collective, or representative proceeding. The arbitrator may not consolidate more than one person's claims or preside over any form of representative or class proceeding.
15.3 Exceptions
Either party may bring an individual claim in small-claims court, and either party may seek injunctive or equitable relief in court to protect its intellectual property or confidential information. Nothing in this section waives any right that cannot be waived under applicable law.
15.4 Opt-Out
You may opt out of this arbitration agreement by emailing support@humanym.com within 30 days of first accepting these Terms, stating your account email and that you opt out of arbitration. Opting out does not affect any other part of these Terms.
16. Changes to These Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date and notify you by email or an in-app notice. Continued use of the Platform after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
17. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Wyoming, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, except that the Federal Arbitration Act governs Section 15. Subject to Section 15, the state and federal courts located in Wyoming have exclusive jurisdiction over any matter not subject to arbitration.
